Lessons from a PWD (person with disability)

by Akim

The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen, not touched.. But are felt in the heart.”

-Hellen Keller

July 17 and July 20 2011 will always be a “special” day for me, and for all of the 3rd year physical therapy students of velez college.

We had a chance to participate in the activity (funwalk) for the persons with disabilities in SM, as well as play and bond with them in the Abellana sports complex during the “Larong Pinoy 2011”

Two of my weaknesses is my shyness and lack of confidence. But seeing those persons with disabilities just go about the daily activities of everyday living made me realize that they may be more capable than I.

Those people whom we facilitated taught me a valuable lesson which I would forever keep in heart and mind.

Amidst the burden carried by the PWD’s, they still continue to walk, run, smile, make new friends and make other people happy.

It’s like they know they have a better purpose in life and that is not to feel sorry for themselves, but to inspire the people around them.

I for one have acquired a high regard for PWD’s wherever I may see them. They go through the streets of Cebu just like any other normal person. Bringing joy to the hearts of whom those they inspire, even us normal people who are so insecure, conscious and drowned in problems and self pity.  Reminding us that no matter what happens, life goes on.

Spending more time with the PWD’s and sharing with their laughter’s would be an honor for all of us who have experienced those two special days with them. It makes us realize that Life is an exciting business, and most exciting when it is lived for others.

The real disability is not when we do not see, hear, touch or speak, but it is when we do not see, hear, touch or speak from the heart.
